Moving fast is breaking things

Obsolescence in technology has long been a feature not a bug. It is unlikely that tech companies want to make us miserable by upgrading everything at a rapid pace. But it would seem that old things become too expensive to maintain when compared to the cost of producing new things.

Spectrum has reported that this is starting to affect the military. But the catch is the cost. With jets and ships costing hundreds of millions of dollars, the investment is only worth it if they are in service for a long time. However, with advances in software and the like, maintaining or updating radars, sonars and weapon systems is becoming exorbitant.
